Welcome to 2011! January 3-7

Spelling this week focuses on the different spellings of the sound of k.

  • /k/ spelled with a c or k: shark, risk, public, sink, electric, blank, crooked, drink, topic, blanket, mistake, junk.
  • /k/ spelled with a ck: attack, jacket, track, struck.
  • /k/ spelled like /kw/: question, squirrel.
  • /k/ spelled with ch: ache, stomach.
Monday Night homework is to list all the words in alphabetical order.

Reading
Today we started a new selection of stories that share the theme of Problem Solvers. The first story is an excerpt from the book My Name is Maria Isabel. Students will be sharpening their skills in predicting outcomes, making inferences, and fantasy verses realism.

All students need to be reading daily to build up their AR points. Students need to have a minimum of 14 points by the end of January to be considered at grade level standard for independent reading.

Math
We are working on long division. It is imperative that students know their basic facts, especially multiplication. If your child has not yet scored 95% or higher, please practice at home. An excellent site for practice pages is http://www.math-drills.com/
