Week 5 September 19-23

I will begin conferencing with parents this week.

Math: We are focusing on Addition and Subtraction Number Sense. During this unit students will be able to round whole numbers, use mental math and estimate sums and differences. Rounding is always a bit confusing at first. The following poem helps:
Rounding
Find your number.
Look right next door.
4 or less, just ignore!
5 or more, add one more.
Math Vocabulary includes rounding, Commutive Property of Addition, Associative Property of Addition, Identity Property of Addition, breaking apart, compensation, counting on, inverse operations. Students will be making more flashcards for homework on Tuesday night.

Reading: We are finishing Grandfather's Journey with the focus on identifying the author's viewpoint, and predicting/infering while reading. We will begin the nonfiction selection Finding the Titanic. During this story we will be learning about text organization and the reading strategy "Monitor/Clarify"

Word Work: We are focusing syllabication, and decoding longer words.
Spelling Words:  Monday, September 19 we will test on the words below.
