Week 20 - January 23-27

Reading Selection: We have begun a new theme called “Problem Solvers”. These stories illustrate young people showing initiative, courage, and cooperation.


 
The first selection is an excerpt from the novel My Name is Maria Isabel. New in school, Maria Isabel doesn’t respond when her teacher calls her Mary and so will miss out on the Christmas pageant. After much worry, she finally explains the importance of her family name to her teacher in an essay, and the teacher asks “Maria Isabel” to participate.

Purposes
  • Strategy focus: predict/infer
  • Comprehension skill: predict outcomes

 
Math: Ms. Owens’ math group is starting geometry. Students will learn about points, lines, line segments, planes, rays, and angles. They will sort polygons. Polygons are many-sided figures, with sides that are line segments. Triangles, squares, and hexagons are three types of polygons.

 
Word Work: Students will learn about the suffix –ible, and the spelling of the /k/, /ng/, and /kw/ sounds.

Grammar: This week’s grammar is focusing on the irregular verb be. The verb be does not show an action. It tells what someone or something is or is like. These verbs are am, was, is, are, were.

 
Writing: We are writing our Native California essays.
