Week 32 April 30-May 4

Reading Selection: Wildfires by Seymour Simon
Wildfires can be destructive, but they are also part of a natural cycle, and often benefit a forest by causing renewed, fresh growth. Fires in Yellowstone and the Everglades demonstrate this cycle.

Genre: Expository Nonfiction
Purposes
  • Strategy focus: monitor/clarify
  • Comprehension skill: topic, main idea, supporting details.
Math: We are reviewing the basic operations: multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. Students need to be able to accurately solve large problems with these operations. We are also naming and finding equivalent fractions, plus taking another look at coordinate geometry.

Word Work: There is a change in spelling this week. Students scoring less than 80% on last week's spelling words will be doing Encore Spelling, and get a second chance. If your child scored 80% or more on last week's test they get a holiday on spelling this week.

Encore Spelling Test will be Friday, May 4th

Grammar:  Students are learning the rules for comparing with adverbs. Add –er to adverbs to compare two actions. Add –est to compare three or more actions. Students need to keep in mind that one never uses –er with more, and –est with most.

California State Testing: We will be taking the California State Tests next week. Take a moment to check out the released questions online. Click on the links: CST Language Arts, CST Mathematics
